Running up the highest mountain in Wales is an unusual way to celebrate your 60th birthday. But Geoff Wright, from Llandaff, Cardiff, did just that on Saturday.
He took part in the International Snowdon Race to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Charity. His father Clifford, 86, was diagnosed with the disease six years ago. "Dad is too old and frail to be operated on or have any more treatment for the cancer but he is taking medication", Geoff said "I feel very lucky to have reached 60 and be able to run a couple of times a week. The race is very important to me because I’ve always wanted to reach the top of Snowdon.I want to celebrate being able to put one foot in front of the other. I’m not a serious runner; I did it for my dad and for other people who haven’t been as fortunate as me."
Geoff, who works at the Welsh for Adults Centre Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan , joined Les Croupiers running club in 1992, before completing his first London Marathon.
He has run the event a further two times, raising money for different charities each time.
Saturday’s race saw 500 runners from across the UK and Europe running the five miles up Snowdon and five miles back down.
Geoff, who has two teenage children, completed the race in a superb 02:21:21, despite Snowdon’s bad weather.
